The Rejuvenators’s Independence Cup
August 19 , 2017
It was a pleasant Saturday morning like any other but still had a uniqueness to it. It was not only “The Rejuvenators”s first futsal event at Bangalore but it also had our first Unsung Hero give away awards to the winners of the tournament! We knew we were going to ignite a new beginning to glorify our yester year sports stars in a very genuine and special way!
The day started off at 10:15 AM with our first match for Group A. Every team in Group A & Group B got an opportunity to play 3 matches of 15minutes each to pass through the league and enter the semi –finals.
By Noon, after a sumptuous lunch we had Clutch Group topping the Group A and Spartans were a close second. Group B had Nautilus topping the group beating Target 1 & L&T TS in a three way battle that was really gripping.
The first Semi-Finals was a battle of nerves between Target 1 & Clutch Group with 1-1 and ended with Clutch Group winning the penalty shootout with a 2-1 score.
The second Semi-Finals was between a tough Spartans and a geared up Nautilus, with Nautilus beating the Spartans 1 -0 to reach the finals.
With this our Chief Guest and Unsung Hero Mr.Mohan Kumar J arrived and met with each of our finalists. Mohan Kumar J, our yesteryear football star agreed to grace the occasion and share his experiences of his 30 year long career as a Defender in the 1970s with us. He was called the “Elephant of Tamil Nadu”, Deep Defender Mohan Kumar who when stood against the opponent gave no chance for them to move ahead. He was also so good at passing the ball that his peers would say that it was a definite goal once he touched it! He has helped achieve over 50+ goals with his very passes! Mohan was known for his calmness that no matter what happened on the ground he never lost his cool & played clean. A “Zero Red card career over 350+ matches” is testimony to that! He also won the “Best Coach” award during the Durand Cup in 1970s.
By this time, there were bouts of rain making the game even more interesting and intriguing! The finals between Clutch Group & Nautilus happened under the showers of rain and what a match that was. The Clutch group won “The Independence Cup” with 1-0 in a passionate and aggressive effort from both teams.
At the awards function, Clutch Group lifted the Winner’s Trophy & Nautilus won the Runners up.
4 individual players were awarded for their sporting spirit and grit.
Shrijit was “The Best Player”
Chandan won “The Best Defender”
Sandesh won “The Golden Gloves”
Jana with 5 goals was “The Golden Boot”
The “Independence Cup” set a bench mark for future tournament’s sporting spirit and energy as every team gave it their best!! And with requests for more tournaments and a feedback score of 8/10, it was worth all the efforts. Like they say, All is well that ends well
